Emotional health; an ignored issue!

World Mental Health Day is a day for worldwide mental health awareness, education and advocacy. It is observed on 10 October every year, with the general goal of bringing issues to light of emotional wellness issues round the world and activating endeavors on the side of psychological well-being.Mental health problems can affect anyone, any day of the year, but 10 October maybe a great day to show your support for better mental health and being taken care of your own wellbeing.

We all know this year has been a troublesome one, particularly for people living with mental illness and their careers.  Research shows that almost 80% of individual living with mental disease says that Covid-19 and also the national response have made their mental state worse. So that's why, this World Mental Health Day, we need to focus on how people with lived experience are overcoming the challenges of lockdown and how, together, we are pushing for a better world, post-pandemic.

Mental illnesses affect 19% of the adult population, 46% of teenagers and 13% of children annually. People struggling with their mental health may be in your family, live round the corner, teach your children and work in the next cubicle. However, only half of those affected receive treatment, actually because of the stigma attached to mental health. Untreated, psychological maladjustment can prompt higher clinical costs, less fortunate execution at school and work, less business openings and expanded danger of self destruction

A mental disease is a physical illness of the brain that causes disturbances in thinking, behavior, energy or emotion that creates it difficult to deal with the standard demands of life

The two common mental health conditions are:

Anxiety Disorders – More than 18% of adults annually struggle with some type of anxiety disorder, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder (panic attacks), generalized anxiety disorder and specific phobias.

Mood Disorders – Mood disorders, such as depression and bipolar depression, affect nearly 10% of adults each year and are characterized by difficulties in regulating one’s mood.

Mental health includes our psychological, emotional and social well-being. It affects how we expect, feel, think and act to situation. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others in stressful conditions and make healthy choices.Mental health is vital at every stage of life and plays a significant role from childhood and adolescence through adulthood.

Although the terms are often used interchangeably, poor mental health and mental disease are not equivalent things. A person can experience poor mental health and not be diagnosed with a mental disease. Likewise, an individual diagnosed with a mental illness can experience periods of physical, mental, emotional and social well-being.Mental and physical health is equally important components of overall health.  Mental disease, especially depression can increases the risk for several sorts of physical health problems, particularly long-lasting conditions like stroke, type 2 diabetes, and heart conditions. Similarly, the presence of chronic conditions can increase the danger for mental disease.

Mental disorders affect one in four people.  One in four people within the world are going to be suffering from mental or neurological disorders at some point in their lives. Around 450 million individuals presently experience the ill effects of such conditions, putting mental problems among the main sources of chronic sickness and handicap around the world. Stigma involves negative attitudes or discrimination against supported a peculiarity like a mental disease, health condition, or disability. Social stigmas can also be associated with other characteristics including gender, sexuality, race, religion, and culture. Tragically, shame encompassing psychological well-being is as yet normal. While stigma isn’t limited to mental conditions, attitudes towards psychiatric illnesses tend to be more negative than that toward medical conditions. Examination has indicated that disgrace is one among the main danger factors adding to poor psychological wellness results.

Although the overall perception of mental illness has improved over the past decades, studies show that stigma against mental illness is still powerful, largely thanks to media stereotypes and lack of education, which people tend to connect negative stigmas to mental health states at a far higher rate than to other diseases and disabilities, like cancer, diabetes or heart disease.Stigma affects not only the numbers seeking treatment, but also the amount of resources available for proper treatment plans. Stigma and misinformation can feel like overwhelming obstacles for someone who is fighting a battle with a mental health condition. Here a couple of amazing things you can do to help:

  • Showing individuals respect and acceptance removes a significant barrier to successfully dealing with their illness. Having people see you as an individual and not as your illness can make the most important difference for somebody who is struggling with their mental health.
  • Advocating within our circles of influence helps ensure these individuals has an equivalent rights and opportunities as other members of your office, school and community.
  • Learning more about emotional well-being permits us to flexibly accommodating help to those influenced in our families and networks.

Just as physical fitness helps our bodies to remain strong, mental fitness helps us to realize and sustain a state of good mental health. Once we are mentally healthy, we enjoy our life and environment, and therefore the people in it. We will be creative, learn, try new things, and take risks. We are better ready to deal with difficult times in our personal and professional lives. We feel the sadness and anger which will accompany the death of a loved one, loss of job or relationship problems and other stressful events, but in time, we are able to get on with and enjoy our lives once again. Nurturing our mental health also can help us combat or prevent the mental health issues that are sometimes related to a chronic physical illness. In some cases, it can prevent the onset or relapse of a physical or mental disease. Managing stress well, as an example, can have a positive impact on heart condition.Mental illness is not a personal failure. In fact, if there is failure, it’s to be found within the way we've skilled people with mental and brain disorders.

Governments all over the world got to make strategic decisions and choices so as to cause positive change within the acceptance and treatment of mental disorders. Some mental disorders are often prevented; most mental and behavioral disorders are often successfully treated; which much of this prevention, cure and treatment is affordable.Regardless of the persistent and long haul nature of some psychological problems, with the correct treatment, individuals influenced from mental issues can carry on with profitable lives and be a significant aspect of their networks. Over 80% of individuals with schizophrenia can be free of relapses at the end of one year of treatment with antipsychotic drugs combined with family intervention that is very important (psychotherapy). Up to 60% of individuals with depression can recover with a proper combination of antidepressant drugs and psychotherapy, which is the vital part of psychotherapeutic treatment. Up to 70% of people with epilepsy are often seizure free when treated with simple, inexpensive anticonvulsants.

A lack of urgency, misinformation, and competing demands are blinding policy-makers from taking stock of a situation where mental disorders figure among the leading causes of disease and disability within the world, says WHO. Depressive disorders are already the fourth leading cause of the worldwide disease burden. They are relied upon to rank second by 2020, behind ischemic coronary illness yet in front of every single other malady.

The COVID-19 pandemic has upset or ended basic psychological well-being administrations in 93% of nations worldwide while the interest for emotional wellness is expanding, steady with a substitution WHO overview.Due to pandemic demand for mental health services has increased. Bereavement, isolation, suicidal thoughts, loss of income and fear are triggering mental health conditions or exacerbating existing ones. Many people may be facing increased levels of drug use, insomnia, depression and anxiety. In the interim, COVID-19 itself can cause neurological and mental inconveniences, similar to incoherence, fomentation and stroke.

Individuals with previous mental, neurological or substance use problems likewise are more helpless to COVID-19; they may stand a higher danger of extreme results and even passing.

My mental health promise this year is to actively challenge people who use language which denigrates or stigmatizes mental illness, each and every time I encounter it. Almost 70 per cent of individuals with a mental illness don’t seek help, but community support for mental health can help change this. If you find that you are battling things in your life, or are concerned about a friend of family member, remember you are not alone and assistance is available. This year, we need to make promise to ourselves that we will be encouraging people to seek help when they need it, helping to break down stigma in relation to mental illness and bringing communities together.
