In a significant regional development, Iran has agreed to allow Pakistani vessels to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, easing restrictions on one of the world’s most critical trade routes.
Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Ishaq Dar, announced that Tehran will permit two Pakistani ships to transit the strait daily, allowing a total of 20 additional vessels under Pakistan’s flag.
Dar described the move as a “welcome and constructive gesture,” calling it a positive step toward peace and regional stability. He emphasized that dialogue and diplomacy remain the only viable path forward.
“This positive announcement marks a meaningful step toward peace and will strengthen our collective efforts in that direction,” he said.
The development gained international attention after Donald Trump highlighted the announcement on social media, amplifying its global significance.
The Strait of Hormuz is a vital corridor for global oil shipments, and recent tensions in the region have severely disrupted maritime trade.
Since the outbreak of conflict, nearly 16 attacks have reportedly damaged at least 17 commercial vessels, leaving between 1,900 and 2,000 ships stranded, according to Reuters.
However, recent assurances from Iran have enabled a limited number of vessels—including those under Pakistani and Indian flags—to pass safely, underscoring the strategic importance of the route.
Pakistan’s Role as Mediator
Pakistan has emerged as a key diplomatic facilitator between Iran and the United States amid ongoing tensions.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif recently held talks with Iran’s president, while foreign ministers from Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Turkey convened in Islamabad to discuss de-escalation strategies.
The two-day meeting is expected to focus on regional stability and could position Islamabad as a potential venue for future US-Iran negotiations.
